Did you know your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) can help you provide support for an older loved one?
Because it might not always be obvious when an elderly family member requires care assistance or what kind of care is most appropriate, families can benefit from the Care Coach support provided by a professional Geriatric Care Manager (GCM). The GCM can work with the primary caregiver or all interested family members over the phone to assess the elder's needs, discuss care scenarios as a group, and establish a care plan agreeable to everyone. A specialist can give you information (as well as referrals) on care options available:
In-Home care for people who can live at home, but need help and medical assistance.
Assisted living for people who need help and are unable to live at home.
Palliative (end-of-life) care helps reduce pain and other symptoms of a serious illness.
Skilled nursing facilities offer specific treatment and attention.
Hospice offers comfort and care for people nearing the end of their lives.
EAP can also help you with referrals online or in person support groups for you and your family.

Back Up Care Advantage Program
When You Need It
- Your elder parent needs assistance with daily tasks, meal preparation, and general supervision.
- You need to work additional hours, or your work schedule has changed, and your regular adult care provider is unavailable.
- Your regular care arrangements are unexpectedly interrupted.

As an employee of Verizon-IBEW, the Back-Up Care Advantage Program offers you care for your loved ones at $4/hour for in-home elder care. You must be registered for this program before care can be provided. Reservations for back-up care are accepted as early as one month in advance and up to the day care is needed.
